NSA Presents on Monday March 17
On Monday, March 17 the music students will have the opportunity to attend a presentation by Jeff Coffin and Roy "Futureman" Wooten. This will occur in our very own Roxy Theatre at 1:00 P.M. Please keep reading for more information about these talented artists. We are so honored that they are coming to NSA!
Jeff Coffin is an internationally recognized saxophonist, bandleader, composer and educator and has been traveling the globe since the late 20th Century. He is a 3x Grammy Award winner from Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and played with them from 1997-2010. In July 2008, Jeff began touring with Dave Matthews Band, and officially joined the group in 2009 following the tragic passing of founding member LeRoi Moore. When not on the road with DMB, Coffin fronts his own group, Jeff Coffin & the Mu’tet, and works around the country presenting music clinics.
RoyEl is an inventor, scientist, musician, composer and two time Grammy Award winning performer with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones known as "Future Man". Audiences became curious when RoyEl appeared with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones ten years ago.
At the heart of that music is RoyEl's ground breaking percussion technique performed on his first invention he calls the Drumitar. The guitar shaped Drumitar allows him to replicate sounds of an entire contemporary drum kit with just a few fingers.
His desire to play with the greatest possible emotional sensitivity has led to his new creation, "The RoyEl": an instrument shaped like a piano upon which he is composing music for the new century. This music employs the power and science of Mother Nature to attain the natural ratios of the Golden Means (Phi) and the keyboard is styled after the table of the periodic elements. It's no accident, he said, that the RoyEl resembles a keyboard since "More and more I see the piano like a drum set and the drum set like a piano.
