POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

The policies and procedures of NSA are designed to help the school run smoothly so that each student will have a successful year at NSA.  This information has been carefully prepared to help students enjoy school life.  Remember, success is directly related to effort.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES

Students are permitted inside the school at 7:00 a.m.  At that time, students are to report to the school cafeteria.  Students should not be in any other area of the building unless they are with a staff member.  Failure to comply with this rule will result in disciplinary action.

School begins at 7:45 a.m. The school day ends at 2:45 p.m. Students and parents should make arrangements for transportation home or to leave school by 4:00 p.m.  If students remain after school for extracurricular activities, they must be under the supervision of a teacher.  There is no loitering on school campus.

MOMENT OF SILENCE

Section 49-1922.  At the commencement of the first class of each day in all grades in public schools, the principal shall announce that a period of silence, not to exceed one minute in duration, shall be observed for meditation, prayer, or personal beliefs.  During any such period, silence shall be maintained.

  • At the beginning of the first class each school day morning, the principal shall announce the following: “State law requires that we begin each school day with a moment of silence.  We shall now observe one minute of silence.”
  • During the quiet time, meditation, prayer or personal beliefs shall remain the free choice of the individual without comments or directives from the teacher before or after the “quiet time.”
  • Students shall be inaudible in any expression or prayer or personal beliefs and shall in no way infringe upon the silence.
  • The period of silence shall be concluded with “Thank you” and/or remarks appropriate for resuming class activities.
  • All movement in hallways, etc., is to cease for the duration of the moment of silence.

VISITORS

Students have a right to attend a school where all persons are known or will identify themselves. Students have the responsibility to identify themselves when identification is requested by authorized personnel.  Students should be able to produce ID badges upon request by any MNPS employee.

All visitors (student or adult) during the school day must register immediately in the main office.  No visitor will be permitted in the building without a visitor’s pass while school is in session. No student visitors from other schools are allowed in the building during school hours.  Students are not allowed to bring friends to school to shadow them for the day without PRIOR permission from the principal.  Students are not permitted to shadow another student unless they are interested in attending NSA the following year.

Parents are encouraged to have conferences with staff members and are requested to arrange these conferences by telephone before the visit.  Parent conferences are usually scheduled on Wednesday afternoon at 2:50 p.m. in the cafeteria. Parents should contact the guidance counselor to schedule parent conferences. Parents are not permitted to sit in a teacher’s classroom for observation without prior notice.

UNAUTHORIZED VISITORS WILL BE SUBJECT TO LEGAL ACTION.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A VISITOR IN SCHOOL

The student requesting the visitor must obtain permission from the principal or assistant principal.

A parental permission slip and form of identification will be presented to the office for individuals under 18 years of age, i.e. library card, driver’s license, and will be returned when the visitor checks back at the office. Students from other high schools will not be allowed to visit while their school is in session unless they have written permission from their school.

  1. Individuals 18 years and older must present a photo identification. The identification will be returned when the visitor returns to the office at the end of the day.
  2. Individuals not enrolled in a high school program will be prohibited from visiting Nashville School of the Arts.
